Last night, the Madison City Council passed an ordinance forcing landlords to provide voter registration forms to all tenants, in the name of increasing voter turnout. One of the main testimonies on the matter was from a college student who said she almost didn’t get to vote because she didn’t know where to go and spent two hours off work just going around town trying to get registered. This is so crazy!
It is just feeding our culture of entitlement. Everything has to be handed to people on a silver platter. This is along the same lines as Obama’s recent comments stating that business success is almost never because of the owner’s hard work. Yeah, sure. That’s just simply not true! Talk to any business owner, in particular a small business owner, and they’ll tell you that the business stays open because of their hard work.
It is absolutely insane to say that all renters need to be given voter registration forms. With no previous knowledge on how to get one, I found them in 13 and a half seconds on google. And certainly for those few that don’t have or use computers, a simple call to the city or county clerk is not outlandish at all.
The other problem is the over regulation of business that we see. There is absolutely no need to impose crazy regulations like this on landlords! The Wisconsin State Constitution states that a free government can only be maintained by moderation and frugality, among other things. Creating more red-tape is exactly the opposite! There’s already landlords who are very frustrated about this.
This is being done in the name of making sure people are able to exercise their right to vote. Here’s the crux of the issue: having a right to vote (or a right to do anything) does not mean that said right must be given to you with absolutely no effort on your part.
We also have a right to carry arms in this country, but somehow, it seems the city council isn’t going to be forcing Landlords to pass those out too.
